Julio Iglesias
Julio Jose Iglesias De La Cueva was born in Madrid, at 2 p.m. on September 23rd
of 1943 at the old and now defunct maternity hospital at the Meson de Paredes
Street. He is the oldest son of Dr. Julio Iglesias Puga and Maria Del Rosario de
la Cueva y Perinan (better known like "Charo"). Julio has one brother named
Carlos.
On his father's side, Julio's ancestors came from Galicia. His father, Dr. Iglesias was
born in Orense. And Julio's grandparents were Manuela and Ulpiano.
On his mother's side, his grandmother Dolores de Perinan Orejuela de
Camporedondo was a direct descendant of Spaniard nobility. Her uncle was the
Marques of Perinan and her cousin, also a marques, was the Spaniard Ambassador
to London for 20 years.
Julio's family lived in the Altamiro Street in Madrid, where he spent the first three
years of his life. But in 1946 they moved to the 27th of Benito Gutierrez Street until
his marriage in 1971.
His first school was Sagrados Corazones and later he would be a law student at
the Colegio Mayor de San Pablo.
Julio Iglesias was a remarkable athlete who sparkled among his teammates in
the Real Madrid soccer team as goalkeeper. His dream was to play
professional soccer.
But on 22nd September night in 1963, when he was 20 years old, while he was
driving from Majadahonda to Madrid at around 2 a.m. with some friends: Enrique
Clemente Criado, Toto Arroyo & Pedro Luis Iglesias; a tragic auto accident left
him semi-paralyzed for a year and a half. There was no hope that he would walk
again. At night, in Mardrid's Eloy Gonzalo Hospital, Julio would listen to the
radio and write poems - sad, romantic verses of poems that questioned man's
mission in life. Eladio Magdaleno, the young male nurse who took care of him,
gave him a guitar. He had never thought of becoming a singer.
Singing had begun as a distraction - as a way of forgetting his happier days spent as an athlete.
Eventually, the guitar was scrawled with numbers, each day larger day by day, Julio had learned the basic
chords and begun to dress his poems with music.
Once he was recovered from his injuries in 1966, as his course at Madrid University had been
interrupted, he went to Murcia University to resume his studies in 1968.
He also went to England to improve his English, first in Ramsgate and then at Bell's Language School in
Cambrige. Some weekends he would sing in the "Air Port Pub" songs that were popular at that time - Tom
Jones, Engelbert Humperdinck, The Beatles...- And was there, in Cambrige, where he met
Gwendolyne Bollore who would became his girlfriend and later also one his musical success, because
he wrote a song dedicated to her, Gwendolyne.
Hoping to find a singer to perform his music, he took his first song to a recording studio in Madrid.
He was stunned when the manager asked him, "Why don't you perform it yourself?" Julio answered,
"Because I'm not a singer"; But he took the song to a Spaniard music contest.
Isabel Preysler
On July 17th 1968 he won the Festival de Benidorm with the song La vida sigue
igual, and signed a contract with Columbia Records.
On February of 1969 he participated in the Brassow Golden Stag Festival
(Bucharest, Romania). During this year, he also recorded his first LP at the DECCA
studios in London, did his first tour in Spain, sang in the Festival de Viña del Mar
(Chile), participated in the San Remo Festival (Italy) and shot his first movie: La vida
sigue igual.
Julio married, on January 20th of 1.971 in Toledo (Spain), to Isabel Preysler Arrastria
(Manila, February 18th 1951), spending their Honeymoon holidays in Gran Canaria
(Canary Islands). They have three children: "Chabeli" María Isabel (Sept.3rd 1971),
Julio José (Feb.25th 1973) y Enrique Miguel (May 8th 1975). They were separated in
1978, and their marriage was annulled one year later.
Julio Iglesias participated in the EUROVISION Song Contest with his song Gwendolyne in 1971, and in
many others while he is number one on the all world lists, from Mexico to Argentina and from Spain to
Japan.
He recorded his song Como el álamo al camino in Japanese ("ANATAMO URAMO") in 1971. The year
after he recorded his first German LP, in 1978 he signed contract with CBS International and recorded
his first album in French, and in Italian. In 1979 recorded his first LP in Portuguese. He was invited to judge
the Miss Universe contest in Australia.
In Paris 1983, Julio Iglesias received the first and only
Diamond Record Award ever given to a perfomer by the
Guinness World Book Of Records for selling more
records in more languages than any other musical artist
in history (Spanish, German, Japanese, English, Italian,
Portuguese, French, Tagalog...)
In 1984 became one of the few
Hispanic artists to be honored
with star on the Hollywood Walk
of Fame. This Star is situated on
the southern part of the Hollywood
Boulevard, between Orange Street
and Sycamore Street.
Also Julio Iglesias has received a king homage
tributated by the residents of Miami, city where he
lives, granting him a honor place in the legendary
Latin Stars Walk, in the 8th Street of Miami.
In 1988, he received the Grammy Award® for
Best Latin Singer of the Year 1987 for his album Un
hombre solo, and Aplausos92 as Artist of the Year.
He was appointed, in 1992, "Universal Spaniard" in Florida, and in Spain "Ambassador of Galicia" to
world. In 1995, Julio Iglesias became the first foreign in China's history to receive the prestigious Golden
Record Award.
Iglesias is the most popular recording artist of the world, he has sold over
250 million albums and recipient more than 2600 Platinum and Gold
records worldwide.
No detail of his career is too small to escape his scrutiny. In the recording
studio Julio crafts each song note by note, word by word, until he reaches
the effect he wants - until he hears something that perhaps only Julio can
hear but that everyone can feel - the sound of the soul trembling with
feeling, a sound achieved only through an iron discipline.
In 1997 Julio got the Monaco World Music Award for the Best Latin
Singer.
On September 7th of 1997 was born his fourth son, named Miguel
Alejandro, at 13.34 GMT in the Mount Sinai Hospital of Miami Beach. The
child weighed three kilos and middle, and he is product of the relation that
Julio is keeping with a young and beautiful Dutchwoman, Miranda
(Miranda Joana Maria Rinjsburguer, Oct. 1965).
Julio Iglesias won't soon forget September 8th of 1997, the night of El Premio ASCAP", that was when Latin
and pop producer/songwriter Emilio Estefan presented Julio with the ASCAP Pied Piper Award, the
Society's most prestigious honor for entertainers. As the first Latin artist to receive the Pied Piper, Julio
joins past winners Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald and Barbara Streisand, among others. In addition, Miami
Mayor Joe Carrollo was on hand to declare "Julio Iglesias Day" in Miami. And, to mark the birth earlier
that week of Julio's new son, Miguel Alejandro, ASCAP CEO John LoFrumento gave Julio a giant stuffed
teddy bear.
Miranda gave birth on April 3rd of 1999 in a Miami hospital to her second son with the artist. The little boy,
named Rodrigo, weighed some three kilos at birth.
